DEFINING THINGLISH!

Thailand is a beautiful country and the people here can be so sweet that you often catch yourself from criticizing the innocent mistakes they make in their use of the English language. But we must sometimes not bite our tongues and rather help them find the right or appropriate word or phrase. Why? Here’s a letter sent to My Girl who has a degree in marketing and who speaks fairly fluent English on a good day. The boss of this company feels perfectly capable of laying down language standards to incumbent and potential employees of his company.

He is of course, completely unknown to him, a master of Thinglish!

Dear Ms M.
Re: Customer Sales – Spleen Modification Division

Thank you your applicator but the English in it is not so on the balls and we need the better we can get. I very apologise the criticize but girl staff must be initiative to handle responsibility in good English and able handle foreigner success.

Not be able to responsible client is also likely fail you to qualify and always smiling is a strong condition to consider you. Any abroad experience will double the yes of getting the job, and many experience like that will you be considerable for a manager position, not just under sales staff opening.

Connection to already selling is fantastic to bring leads of selling to the job together and brighten your chance much improved by knowing many potential.

Pretty and in good condition is essential and not marry is finer as many time to dine and wine client to get sale satisfaction. Look the clothes perfect and well prepared for customer view you is necessary and fat is no good.

Better is that you have get education in sum language and of course the English is quintessential as was Japan and German if you want travel on selling missionary abroad the sea and go headquarter training America.

Thank you for interesting our company and after check your picture it will be good for us if you can meet for fuhrer discussion about possible working in with us as a sales staff but get English trainin.

Please be contact our office Ms Japp and make her an appointment with us at the your inconvenience as we needs staff quick with Tsunami making us busy rightly.

Spot on and very funny--reminds me of a Chinese grocery store here in Boston that hires girls from China who have just arrived. All the girls are taking ESL (English as a second language)classes and they are all charming and anxious to please. We have wonderful conversations. Neither party ever understands anything the other party has said. Same-same Thailand.

I would like to believe that if I punished myself for four years taking learn to speak Thai classes three times per week and special tutoring one day per week that things would improve. However in those middle of the night conversations with myself when I can't lie--I don't really believe it.
